This site is fantastic and has lots of Great HO Train Layouts
Photo of the St. Louis Central HO scale model railroad at the Missouri History Museum. For over a decade, the Gateway Division has constructed small model train layouts for display and demonstrations at local train shows. One of our exciting projects was the construction of a custom 4′x8′ model railroad for the Missouri History Museum. This layout was displayed in their exhibit, “Our World in Miniature” during the Winter of 2003. You can click this photo to go to the start of the over 100 photos of this layout, and each of its structures. A number of the buildings have articles or tips on how to assemble that specific model kit.

Here is a nice review on the Bachmann Trains Overland Ready to Run Train Set review from Amazon:
“The Bachmann HO Overland Limited Train Set is an absolutely beautiful train set if all you want to do is look at it. If you want to operate the Overland Limited Set or play with it, BUY SOMETHING ELSE: The wheels fall off and will not stay on as the train navigates the snap-fit tracks built for it. The Train does not get around the entire loop of tracks without losing nearly all its wheels on the main car as well as the accompanying nine cars. Flipping the switch on the terminal rerailer amounts to a derailment because the wheels can’t handle turns. The worst part is the merchants selling this product know this and will not accept returns or issue refunds or exchanges once the item has been opened. It is a very expensive Train Set which is frustrating especially when I think about the fact that I purchased it as my kid’s first really expensive toy for $198.60 and my kid didn’t play with it for more than five minutes before the wheels fell off. Mind you, this is just while he is watching the train navigate the snap-fit tracks.” The biggest and the best for serious railroad enthusiasts. From a powerful 4-8-4 steam locomotive, to an impressive consist of nine cars, this set has it all! The Overland Limited comes complete with Bachmann’s exclusive E-Z Track snap-fit track and roadbed system.

If you want your model railroad to come alive, you need the right accessories – Buildings, bridges, crossings, people and landscaping are essential. Yes, it takes a lot of time, and some money to be sure. But I remember when i was a kid, my brother and I spent hours on end building tunnels, overpasses, laying more track and adding to our ever growing Model Train Paradise! Hey, we weren’t doing drugs and we weren’t skipping school, and we got along… My parents loved having us home.
But what made our model railroad come alive was the accessories we kept adding. Every week, we would spend whatever money we had on more buildings. More Shrubs. More street lights… yeah, it was heaven on earth for us!
Now in my 50s, I don’t have time for that anymore, but the memories are thick and will last forever…

A Brief History of Model Trains… This is a great article by Estaban Cuenca.
Ever wondered where exactly did the hobby of making model trains started from? Or how long has the model train been around? Who started it and who’s been doing it ever since?
Like much of anything built by modern man, these trains appeared as soon as their real counterparts came along. It was sometime in the 19th century that the modern railway system was invented and around this time, people have been making the model equivalents of each train as well. Initially, the models were meant to promote the trains themselves as most people haven’t had the chance to see an actual train then. Before a railway could be completed, models of the railway and their trains would be on display to invite prospect passengers and curious beings into thinking about riding a train.
As time progressed, people started wanting the model trains for themselves and viola, the model train industry was born. The trains in the 19th century however were not as endearing as what we have today. Most trains were made with tin and wood and weren’t even working models although one stand-out manufacturer in the name of Marklin started developing and selling working locomotive models as soon as the train toy demand sky-rocketed. Up to this day, Marklin remains to be one of the top manufacturers of model trains having kept their tradition of excellent quality and a hefty price tag.
These trains were not big in America alone. Hobbyists included children and adults from both America and European nations such as the UK and Germany. It can even be noted that before the first world war, most prototype train manufacturers were from Germany. However, during the height of the war, shipments to America were stopped and this cease in model train shipments gave birth to American manufacturers such as Lionel and Ives.
The hobby grew large and demand was through the roof but the common problem with working prototype trains were that they were too expensive. The solution was later discovered by some American brands. They simply made less- complicated designs which had such an appeal to the middle class that the model train hobby became one of the largest hobbies during those times.
Upon entering the 20th century, these trains became more detail oriented and layout designs became more complex. Up until today, modelers are still in their search for making their dream layouts complete with realistic backgrounds and model houses.
